Welsh soprano Carly Owen has completed her first Season in the ensemble at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg where she gave critically acclaimed role debuts as Gilda Rigoletto, Ilia Idomeneo, Pamina Die Zauberflöte and Hanna Glawari Die lustige Witwe. Her 2019/20 season include two role revivals firstly as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Theater Winterthur, Switzerland and Hanna Glawari. She will perform three new roles in premier productions, as Li Die Heilige Ente (Hans Gál) Marzelline Fidelio and Ottilie Im Weissen Rössl. Other season highlights include her debut at The Cheltenham Music Festival Concert Series 2020 performing Strauss's Four Last Songs with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Joshua Weilerstein.
Recent highlights include her role debut as Marzelline Fidelio (Act 2) with Welsh National Opera (conductor- Lothar Koenigs, director Sir David Poutney), she performed as a soloist in the world premier of - Sorrows of the Somme (Brian Hughes) at BBC Hoddinot Hall, Cardiff and as a soprano soloist in Bach/Vivaldi Magnificat, Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg.
Last season Carly was a member of the National Opera Studio programme in London where she took part in residencies across the UK and developed a number of roles including title role Rodelinda (Opera North) director Christopher Alden, Magda Sorel The Consul (St John’s Smith Square) director Keith Warner, The Queen of Shemakha The Golden Cockerel and Susanna Khovanshchina (Scottish Opera) director Max Hoehn, Violetta La Traviata, Alice Ford Falstaff, Rosalinde Die Fledermaus, Countessa Le Nozze di Figaro, Romilda Serse (Welsh National Opera) director Emma Jenkins.
In 2017 she made another debut as Musetta La Bohème with Diva Opera with performances in the UK and in France for which she received outstanding reviews.
In 2017 she graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music Masters in Vocal Performance course where performances included the role of Violante (Sandrina) La finta giardiniera directed by Harry Fehr again receiving excellent reviews ‘Soprano Carly Owen, as Violante, was feisty and full of character; she used her focused tone and strong vibrato to convey Violante’s steeliness.’ (Claire Seymour, Opera Today).
Carly is a Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto alumna and participated in the 2018 Solti Peretti Repetiteurs’ Masterclasses in Venice. She has performed in masterclasses with Dame Gwyneth Jones, Angela Gheorghiu, Richard Bonynge and Carmen Giannattasio. Recently she was a finalist in the 2018 Welsh Singers Showcase, performing at St David's Hall with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
In 2015 she won the London Welsh Young Singer of the Year Competition, as well as the recipient of the Audience Prize. She was also a semi-finalist in the 2017 Kathleen Ferrier Awards Competition. Carly has performed as a soloist with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir at Gloucester Cathedral and as a soprano soloist in Mendelssohn's Elijah with the London Welsh Chorale in Sloane Square (cond. Edward-Rhys Harry).
Carly is very greatful for the support she has received by the Carne Trust, the Clemence Charitable Trust, Kathleen Trust, Ryan Davies Memorial Fund and the Soirée d'Or.
